AI search visibility tools compared: how to choose one
By Mentioned · Published · 7 min read
The short answer
AI search visibility tools run buyer questions through AI engines such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews and report how often your brand is named, which competitors appear and which sources are cited. They differ mainly in which engines they cover, whether you track your own prompts or a vendor's prompt database, how often prompts run, which metrics they report, and how transparent the pricing is. Choose by matching those five things to the engines your buyers use and the decisions you need to make.
Key takeaways
- Every tool in this category does the same core job: run prompts, detect brand mentions, show competitors and cited sources. The differences are in coverage, prompt source, frequency, metrics and price.
- Engine coverage varies widely, from three engines to seven or more. Pay only for the engines your buyers actually use.
- Your own prompts measure your market; a vendor's prompt database shows the wider landscape. Some tools offer both.
- Because AI answers vary from run to run, ask every vendor how many runs back each number and how they handle variation.
- Vendor facts below were checked on each vendor's own site on 4 November 2026. Features change; verify before you buy.
A year or two ago, checking AI visibility meant typing questions into ChatGPT and pasting answers into a spreadsheet. There is now a whole category of software for it, from add-ons inside large SEO suites to dedicated platforms and small, focused trackers. This guide compares them by the criteria that matter, using only what each vendor states on its own website. We make one of these tools, Mentioned, so we have kept our own entry to plain facts and told you when another tool may suit you better.
What every AI visibility tool does
The core loop is the same everywhere:
- Take a set of prompts: buyer questions about your category.
- Send them to one or more AI engines, on a schedule.
- Detect which brands each answer names, and in what order.
- Collect the sources each answer cites.
- Report your visibility, your competitors' visibility, and the sources, over time.
If you have done this by hand, you know why tools exist: answers vary between runs, so a reliable number needs many prompts run many times. SparkToro's research with Gumshoe found AI tools give the same brand list twice less than once in 100 runs, and concluded that visibility percentage across dozens to hundreds of prompts, run multiple times, is a reasonable metric while rank tracking is not.
The criteria that separate them
1. Engine coverage
Tools cover anything from three engines to seven or more: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, Claude, DeepSeek and others. More is not automatically better. If your buyers are mostly on ChatGPT and Google, paying for broad coverage adds cost and noise. If you sell to developers or enterprises, Claude or Copilot coverage may matter.
2. Where the prompts come from
Some tools track prompts you write. Others maintain a large database of prompts and show how any brand appears across it. Your own prompts measure the questions your buyers ask; a database is good for exploring a market and benchmarking competitors without setup. SparkToro found that people phrase the same intent very differently, with an average semantic similarity of 0.081 across human-written prompts, so whichever source you use, cover each topic with several phrasings.
3. Frequency and runs
Daily, weekly or monthly runs, and sometimes several runs per prompt. Frequency mostly matters for spotting trends quickly. Ask how many runs sit behind each percentage, because a number from one run per prompt is much noisier than one from five.
4. Metrics
All tools report mentions. Beyond that, look for share of voice against named competitors, cited sources by domain and URL, per-prompt results with the full answer text, and sentiment or description analysis. Rank position is commonly shown; given how unstable ordering is, treat it as secondary. Our post on tracking share of voice in AI answers explains how to read these metrics.
5. From data to action
Some tools stop at measurement. Others add recommendations, content drafts or workflows. Decide whether you want the tool to tell you what to do, or only to measure while your team decides.
6. Price and limits
Pricing models vary: per prompt, per check, per brand, by seat or by sales quote. Compare the cost of the prompt volume you actually need, at the frequency you need it, across the engines you need. Watch for engines that consume more credits than others.
What the vendors say they cover
The table summarises what each vendor's own site stated when we checked on 4 November 2026. It is not a review: we did not test these products, and we include no ratings or prices we could not verify on the vendor's page.

Which kind of tool fits which team
- You already pay for a large SEO suite: check whether its AI visibility module covers your engines before buying a separate tool. Suite add-ons are convenient when your team lives in that suite.
- You need broad engine coverage or market-wide data: tools with large prompt databases or many engines are built for that, typically at a higher price and with more setup.
- You are a single brand or small team that wants a clear number and a to-do list: a focused tracker with a fixed monthly price and your own prompts is usually enough.
- You are an agency: look at the number of brands per plan, per-client reporting, exports and white-label options.
- You are only exploring: a manual check, or a free one-off check, will tell you whether this is worth paying for.
Questions to ask before you buy
- Which engines are included in my plan, and do any cost more credits than others?
- Do the engines run with web search on, as a user would see them, or through a plain model API?
- How many runs back each percentage, and how do you show uncertainty or variation?
- Can I write my own prompts, and can I see the full answer text for each one?
- Do you report cited sources at the URL level, and can I export them?
- How do you detect my brand when it is misspelled, abbreviated or mentioned only by product name?
- What happens to my history if I change prompts or downgrade?
If you want to do it yourself first
A manual audit is a good way to learn what the metrics mean before paying for a tool. Our guide on how to check if ChatGPT recommends your brand gives the method: a fixed set of unbranded buyer prompts, several runs each, and the same fields recorded for every answer. Or run the free AI visibility check to see five prompts' worth of results for your brand.
Frequently asked questions
Are AI visibility tools accurate?
They are as accurate as their method. Because answers vary between runs, a number is only meaningful if it rests on enough prompts and runs. SparkToro's research supports visibility percentages built that way, and is sceptical of rank positions. Ask vendors how they handle this.
Do I need to track every AI engine?
No. Track the engines your buyers use. For many B2B and consumer brands that means ChatGPT and Google's AI features first, then others as budget allows.
Can a tool improve my visibility, or only measure it?
Measurement is the core. Some tools add recommendations or drafts, but the work itself, such as getting onto cited pages and improving your own content, still has to be done by you or your agency.
