What is answer engine?
Also called: AI answer engine, AI search engine
Definition
An answer engine is a search system that responds to a question with a direct, written answer, usually generated by AI and often with cited sources, instead of a ranked list of links. Perplexity, ChatGPT with search, Gemini and Google's AI Overviews all work as answer engines.
Explained
Traditional search engines return documents and let the user do the synthesis. Answer engines do the synthesis themselves, picking a few brands, facts and sources to present. That makes the selection step, which sources are read and which brands are named, the thing to optimize.
Voice assistants were early answer engines, but they mostly read a single snippet. Today's AI answer engines combine many sources into one response, which is why consensus across the web matters so much.
Example
Typing "best standing desk under $500" into a search engine returns ten review pages. Asking an answer engine the same question returns a short list of three desks with reasons and links to the reviews it relied on.
