What is zero-click search?

Also called: no-click search

Definition

A zero-click search is a search where the user's question is answered on the results page itself, through a snippet, an AI Overview or an AI chat answer, so they never click through to a website. As AI answers spread, more of a buyer's research happens without a visit to any brand's site.

Explained

Zero-click results existed long before AI: weather boxes, featured snippets and knowledge panels already answered many queries. AI Overviews and chat assistants extend that to complex questions such as "which CRM should a five-person agency use?".

The practical shift is from "did they click my link?" to "did the answer mention my brand, and in what light?". Being named becomes the impression, and the visit, if it comes, happens later as a branded search or a direct visit.

Example

A buyer asks ChatGPT for the best scheduling tool for a dental practice, reads the three names it gives, then types one of them straight into the browser. None of the three brands sees a referral visit, but one of them gets a customer.
