What is LLM SEO?

Also called: LLM optimization, LLMO, AI SEO

Definition

LLM SEO is the work of improving how large language models (LLMs) describe and recommend a brand, both from what they learned in training and from pages they retrieve at answer time. It is another name for the same discipline as GEO and AEO, used mostly by people coming from traditional SEO.

Explained

An LLM can know about your brand in two ways. Parametric knowledge is what it absorbed during training, frozen at its knowledge cutoff. Retrieved knowledge is what it reads from the web when it answers, through a search tool. LLM SEO tries to influence both: being widely and consistently described across the web, and having pages that rank and are easy to extract.

Classic SEO skills transfer well: crawlability, clear information architecture, links from relevant sites and pages that answer real questions. What changes is that you also care about how your brand is described on pages you do not own.

Example

An email tool finds that ChatGPT without search describes its pricing from two years ago. It updates its pricing page, its G2 profile and its Wikipedia-style "about" facts so retrieval-based answers pick up the current details, while older training data slowly gets replaced in newer models.
