What is prompt tracking?

Also called: AI prompt tracking, LLM rank tracking

Definition

Prompt tracking is the practice of asking AI engines the same set of buyer questions on a regular schedule and recording which brands each answer names, in what order, and which sources it cites. It is the AI-search equivalent of keyword rank tracking.

Explained

AI answers are non-deterministic: the same question can return different brands on different days. One check is a snapshot; prompt tracking turns snapshots into a trend, so you can tell whether a change is real or noise.

A good prompt set mixes broad category questions, use-case questions, comparison questions and branded questions, written the way real buyers phrase them. Keep the set stable so week-to-week numbers are comparable.

Example

An agency tracks 40 prompts for a client every day across ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini. After the client is added to two major review sites, its mention rate on Perplexity climbs over three weeks while ChatGPT stays flat, which tells the agency where to look next.
