What is share of voice in AI?

Also called: AI share of voice, AI SOV

Definition

Share of voice in AI is the proportion of brand mentions in AI-generated answers that go to your brand, compared with competitors, across the same set of buyer prompts. It shows not just whether you appear, but how much of the conversation you own in your category.

Explained

A simple way to calculate it: run a fixed set of prompts across the engines, count every brand mention in every answer, then divide your mentions by the total. Some tools weight mentions by position, since being named first usually matters more than being named fifth.

Share of voice is most useful as a trend and as a comparison. It tells you which competitor the engines prefer, on which engine, and whether your work is closing the gap.

Example

Across 50 prompts on three engines, answers name brands 400 times in total. Your brand is named 60 times and your largest competitor 140 times. Your AI share of voice is 15%, theirs is 35%.
