llms.txt generator and validator
Enter your site. If it has an llms.txt we check it against the llmstxt.org format; if not, we draft one from your homepage and sitemap that you can copy or download.
What llms.txt is
llms.txt is a proposed standard from Jeremy Howard (Answer.AI): a Markdown file at /llms.txt that gives language models a short, curated map of a site. It is like a sitemap written for a reader, with a summary and the pages worth reading first.
What the validator checks
- An H1 with the site or project name, as the first line. This is the only required part.
- A blockquote summary under it: one or two sentences on what the site is.
- Optional notes (paragraphs or lists, no headings) before the first section.
- H2 sections, each a list of links in the form - name: optional notes. A section called Optional marks links that can be skipped.
- That the file is a real text file, not your HTML app answering every URL.
How the generator builds a draft
It takes your site name and description from the homepage, reads the URLs in your sitemap (the one in robots.txt, or /sitemap.xml), groups them by their first path segment (/blog, /docs…), and keeps up to 50, spread across sections. It fetches titles and descriptions for the first 20 and names the rest from their URLs. Edit the draft before publishing: cut pages that don't help someone understand what you offer, and write a better summary than your meta description.
Does llms.txt help AI visibility?
Be realistic. No major AI search engine has said it uses llms.txt to rank or cite pages, and Google says you don't need AI text files to appear in its AI features. It is useful for AI coding tools and agents that read documentation, and it costs ten minutes. Allowing AI crawlers and having clear, server-rendered pages matters far more.
Questions about the llms.txt generator and validator
Where do I put llms.txt?
At the root of your domain, so it loads at https://yoursite.com/llms.txt, served as plain text (text/plain or text/markdown). In Next.js, a route handler at app/llms.txt/route.ts works; on most hosts you can upload the file to the public folder.
What is llms-full.txt?
A companion file some sites publish with the full text of their key pages in one Markdown file, so a model can read everything in a single request. It is optional.
Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. robots.txt tells crawlers what they may fetch. llms.txt suggests what to read and summarizes the site. It doesn't allow or block anything.
My site has no sitemap. Can it still generate a draft?
Yes. Without a sitemap the generator uses the links on your homepage instead. Adding a sitemap.xml is worth it anyway: search engines use it to find your pages.
Is the tool free?
Yes, free with no signup, and no AI is used: the draft is built from your own titles and descriptions.
